Melbourne Psychologist Psychological Services

Clinical Psychology Services

Primary Care Psychology is not a general, long-term counselling service. Instead we aim to achieve mutually-determined, positive outcomes using evidence-based, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). What this means for the client is the most efficient use of time and the best chance for recovery.

Primary Care Psychology operates four separate clinical services:

Primary Care Outreach Service - Home Visit

Our Home-Visit program offers clinical psychology services to clients in their homes who are unable, or find it difficult, to attend a medical clinic on a regular basis.

This service is appropriate for:

  • the elderly
  • people suffering chronic pain or illness
  • patients recently discharged from hospital
  • those with panic disorder and / or agoraphobia
  • people acutely depressed or experiencing low motivation (e.g., clients with eating disorders)
  • people experiencing financial hardship

In recognition of the financial difficulties that many of these clients experience, those referred under this system are bulk-billed, meaning that no money is exchanged.

This service is currently available for residents of the south-eastern suburbs (between Port Melbourne and Mordialloc, and further eastwards). If you live outside this region then please email and we will assess if it is possible to offer a home-visit, dependent upon travel time.

Please note, that for safety reasons a supervising adult (such as a parent, spouse or carer) must be present in the household for the duration of each home-visit. The supervising adult does not need to be present in the room in which therapy is conducted.

Clients who are unable to make these arrangements will be given the option of clinic-based appointments.

2016 Update: From January 1st, home visits will be replaced by our Online Counselling mental health service. Home visits will still be available to older adults who do not have access to Skype video.

Primary Care Outreach Service - Office Visit

Our new bulk-billed office-visit service aims to assist employees who find it inconvenient to take time off work to attend psychology appointments. Unlike a dental or doctor’s appointment, psychological therapy requires ongoing, regular attendance, usually for several months, in order for lasting changes to unfold and become established.

Depending on the nature of your workplace, you may need to check with your manager or human resources officer that these consultations are appropriate. To ensure confidentiality, we ask that you have access to a private office for a minimum of one hour.

This service is bulk-billed (no fee) with an appropriate referral from a GP or psychiatrist, and is available to all organisations (big or small) in the Melbourne CBD or south-eastern suburbs (between Port Melbourne and Mordialloc, and further eastwards). For organisations outside this region please email and we will assess if it is possible to offer workplace visits, dependent upon travel time.

Primary Care Outreach Service - Hospital Visit

Our clinical psychologists are trained in hospital environments and understand the distress, anguish and anxiety that can confront all hospital patients.

We offer inpatient (including bedside) consultations and can assist with:

  • Pre-surgical anxiety
  • Post-surgical inpatient recovery
  • Adjustment and depression
  • Panic and worry

Please check with the nurse manager of your ward prior to booking an appointment. Also, please be aware that while we strive for the highest standard in patient-practitioner confidentiality, there are limits to third-party confidentiality in a shared room.

This service is bulk-billed (no fee) with an appropriate referral from a GP or psychiatrist, and is available to hospitals in the Melbourne CBD or south-eastern suburbs (between Port Melbourne and Mordialloc, and further eastwards). For hospitals outside this region please email and we will assess if it is possible to offer a hospital-visit, dependent upon travel time.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment protocol that aims to reduce distress and improve mood by changing the way we think about things (thoughts) and the way we do things (behaviours).

Unfortunately we can't change our emotions directly, so it's necessary to address them indirectly via our thoughts and behaviours.

Therapeutic techniques vary according to the particular issue, but commonly include keeping a diary of significant events and associated feelings, thoughts and behaviours; questioning and testing thoughts and beliefs that might be unhelpful or unrealistic; gradually facing situations that may have been avoided; and trying out new ways of behaving and reacting.

It needs to be emphasised that all forms of successful psychotherapy require clients to make cognitive or behavioural changes, and a well trained psychologist will assist you to select and implement the most appropriate changes for your circumstances.

Did you know?

  • Most psychologists are unwilling to offer home-visit services for safety reasons. However, there are many people who could benefit from psychological therapy but are unable to regularly attend an outpatient clinic.

By completing a series of safety checks before we commence home-based therapy, Primary Care Psychology is able to offer Melbourne a fully bulk-billed home-visit service.
